Write Down Key Dates & Numbers

Don’t trust your memory. Campaign calendars fill up fast, and missing one deadline can end your run before it starts. Create a single document, spreadsheet, or even a whiteboard in your office that holds the following:

  • The date you decided to run — This is for you. It marks the start of your campaign story.
  • Signature deadline — When do your petition signatures need to be submitted? How many do you need? Write down the number and track progress as you collect.
  • Early voting start for the primary — Even if you don’t have a primary, knowing the date keeps you aware of when voting actually begins.
  • Primary election day — Again, even if uncontested, this is part of your campaign timeline.
  • Early voting start for the general election
  • General election day — This is your finish line.

Pro tip: Put every date in your phone calendar and a shared campaign calendar so everyone on your team is in sync.
